The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to end global hunger. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.
In emergencies, WFP gets food to where it is needed, saving the lives of victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters. After an emergency, WFP uses food to help communities rebuild their shattered lives. Present in nearly 80 countries, the organization has the global footprint, deep field presence and local knowledge and relationships necessary to provide access to nutritious food and contribute to the lasting solutions, especially in many of the world’s most remote and fragile areas.
We manage an operating budget of approximately $5.9 billion each year, distributing 12.6 billion rations to those most in need. We reach an average of 80 million people with food assistance in around 80 countries each year
STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Currently enrolled or have recently graduated within the last 6 months with a university degree in Gender and Development, Sociology, Anthropology, Social Sciences, International Development or other relevant field,;
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate study;
- Have attended university courses in the past 12 months;
- Fluent in oral and written English;
- Demonstrated self-starter with drive and initiative;
- High attention to detail;
- Ability to learn new technology quickly through instructions and self-training;
- Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills;
- Highly proficient in the MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, PPT, Word);
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff members of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds.
ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
The pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment i WFP is central to fulfilling its dual mandate to end global hunger and save lives. To achieve it's Strategic Objectives and meet the United Nations Secretary-General’s Zero Hunger Challenge, WFP must systematically address the different needs and capacities of women, men, girls and boys in all of its work. The overall goal of WFP gender policy is to enable WFP to integrate gender equality and women’s empowerment into all of its work and activities, to ensure that the different food security and nutrition needs of women, men, girls and boys are met. To achieve this goal, the policy establishes four objectives- Food assistance adapted to different needs
- Equal participation
- Decision-making by women and girls.
- Gender and protection
Gender mainstreaming means systematically integrating a gender perspective into the needs assessment, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of food assistance policies and programmes.
JOB PURPOSE
In Sudan, WFP is working to make the utmost effort to ensure that gender mainstreaming is integral, not only to programming, but also within all areas of the operations. Within the framework of the current WFP Interim Country Strategic Plan (ICSP 2017 - 2018), WFP is seeking an intern to work in the Country Office Gender Unit to support the units efforts towards gender mainstreaming. The intern will work with all programme units and partners to ensure that gender equity principles are incorporated into all policies and activities. The intern will also have the opportunity to learn about WFP’s programmes, processes and partnerships in Sudan through this placement.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
The intern will be responsible for a range of duties including:
- Work with Gender Officer and Sudan Gender Result Network (GRN) on the implementation of the gender action plan;
- Work with the Gender Officer to develop guidance on the integration of gender equality approaches in WFP’s activities;
- Assist with organizing monthly meetings with GRN and core team;
- Support the Gender Officer and core team in finalization of gender improvement plan;
- Liaise with GRN for events related to gender equality and women empowerment;
- Provide support to the Programme unit on gender mainstreaming activities;
- Other relevant tasks as required.
OTHER SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS
A second UN language is desirable (preferably French, Spanish or Arabic)TERMS AND CONDITIONS
- Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
- WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
- Depending on the duty station of assignment, WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
- WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;
