Position summery:
To carry out effective day to day activities of the lab in respect to quality, turnaround time, client service, and productivity. 

Main Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Laboratory Supervision
a. Supervise the laboratory team to execute laboratory-based tasks, which include sample selection, drying, preparing, testing, measuring, recording and analysing results in order to ensure good quality results are delivered to clients
b. Supervise the setup of equipment for use in the laboratory to ensure that equipments are well calibrated at all times
2. Laboratory Activities & Reporting
a. Assist the Laboratory Manager in the selection of the most appropriate testing method for the analysis of a batch of samples
b. Use computer and computer interfaced equipment to generate data reports
c. Guide technicians to perform appropriate laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data
d. Maintain accurate analytical records and report results 
e. Provide reports on a weekly and monthly basis to ensure the agreed TAT’s with clients are met and take corrective action if there are delays.
f. Manage and Troubleshoot analytical and technical issues affecting laboratory performance
g. Direct and communicate analytical activities and issues  in order to develop reliable and efficient methods of analysis
3. Quality Control
a. Maintain a monthly QC & TAT report in order to ensure agreed criteria are met
b. Conduct QA/QC testing to validate analytical accuracy and efficiency
c. Coordinate external & internal “Round Robin” programmes in order to meet ISO 17025 requirements
4. Customer/Stakeholder Relationship
a. Maintain cordial relationship with both internal and external stakeholders
b. Work closely with clients in order to meet their specific needs and the required turnaround times.
c. Handle client complaints in a professional manner in order to achieve highest rate of client satisfaction and lowest rate of client defection without sacrifice of profitability.
5. HSE
a. Observe all company health, safety and environmental instructions, act in a safe manner and avoid unnecessary risks to themselves and others
b. Immediately report any unsafe conditions or activities, dangerous occurrences or injuries in the workplace
c. Execute any incident investigation thoroughly by analysis and follow-up in order to take immediate corrective actions and prevent recurrence
d. Assist new and existing employees in the use of relevant work procedures and practices in order to ensure their safety and the safety of all employees
e. Adhere and practice safety as per the company HSE guidelines and policy at all times
Any other duties as and when required by the Board that are reasonably within the capabilities of the person and aimed at achieving the Company or Group goals.

Minimum Qualification & Experience:
Qualification:

  • A Master’s degree in Chemistry (Desirable)
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry
  • Certificate in Laboratory Techniques or equivalent


Experience:

  • Minimum 7 years of laboratory experience
  • Experience in analytical chemistry in the mining industry (Desirable)
  • Required Skills & Knowledge:
  • In-depth understanding of ISO 17025 requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external parties at all levels
  • Ability to deal effectively with external parties at all levels
  • Ability to build and maintain excellent relationships with clients and colleagues
  • Numerate, analytical, attention to details
  • Have good  telephone skills, verbal communication,  listening, professionalism, customer focus, organizing, informing others
  • Computer literacy (MS Office, LIMS, INTERNET etc)
  • Intensive knowledge of local mining business
  • English language proficiency
